The Sool region town of Tukaraq early Monday fell to Somaliland forces after fierce fighting with Puntland forces, Radio Dalsan reports.
Residents told HornAfrik that Somaliland forces invaded the town in the wee hours of Monday leading to fire fight with Puntland forces which has been in control of the Tukaraq.
The capture of Tukaraq came on the second day of Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo’s first official tour of Puntland.
Tukaraq is less than 90km from Puntland administrative capital Garowe where Farmaajo kicked off his regional tour on Sunday.
Sool region has been contested over between the breakaway region of Somaliland and Puntland leading to fighting in the past.
