AU Forces Capture Al-Shabaab Training Base in Lower Shabelle


Somali forces and those of the African Union mission (AMISOM) have captured al-Shabaab militants base in Abiikarow village of Lower Shabelle region, officials said on Friday.

Early this month, Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo announced a counter-offensive against al-Shabaab after the militants killed over 350 people in a truck bombing in Mogadishuon October 14.
The troops overpowered the militants and took control of a training base following military operation on Friday.
Somali National Army (SNA) leading Commander, Hassan Abukar Mohamed said the militants fled following heavy fighting outside the village in which the joint troops approached from various directions.
“Our forces attacked the village from three directions. The militants were forced to flee. the troops secured the control of Abiikarow.” Mohamed Somali Update Online on the phone from the village.
Abiikarow was the location of an al-Shabaab training camp and according to locals, the militants also vacated the training camp.
“The military entered the village without resistance. All al-Shabaabs run away from here. They even left their training camp.” one resident who asked anonymity for fear of reprisals told Somali Update Online.
In recent weeks, Somali forces have been carrying out operations to flush out al-Shabaab militants from Lower and Middle Shabelle regions.
Al-Shabaab once controlled most of central and southern Somalia but has lost nearly all its territory over the last six years to Somali forces backed by AMISOM troops.
