BRUSSELS: 30-year-old Belgian of Somali Origin Shot Dead by Police
An individual who had attacked soldiers of patrol in Belgium with a knife, had a fake weapon and two Koran books with him, the office of the county’s prosecutor said in a statement on Saturday.
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The attack had been perpetrated at around 08:00 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT) on Friday. The attacker has reportedly been injured twice and died subsequently from his wounds in the hospital while two security officers have suffered minor injuries. The crisis center as part of the Belgian Interior Ministry announced it was treating the ambush as an act of terrorism.
“The man had a fake firearm and two Korans with him,” the statement read.
Belgian media reported earlier on Saturday, citing Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon that the perpetrator was a Belgian citizen of Somalian origin. The attacker had reportedly committed several “acts of vandalism” in the past but had not been identified by the authorities as security over terrorism, extremism or radicalism.
Jambon also said he did not rule out a terrorist attack since the attacker had cried “Allahu Akbar” during it.
The terrorists was residing in the Belgian city of Brugge where the searches had been carried out early on Saturday.
Military patrols have been stationed around the city in the wake of terrorist attacks by Islamist militants in Paris and Brussels in the past two years.
